Any OS before the last version of Lion will not cut it with any GTX6xx series card.

With Mountain Lion 10.8.4 (and 10.8.3) Apple started including nVidia drivers for this card as part of the OS. My displays are connected with two DVI cables and one DisplayPort->DVI cable. The GTX660 provides four display sockets – DVI-dual link (for 27″ and 30″ displays as well as all smaller ones), DVI single link (all others except 27/30″), DisplayPort (not Mini DisplayPort) and HDMI. I use three Dell displays all with DVI sockets. Replace the cover, plug in all your cables and you are ready to go. Power cable plugged into the graphics card. Some later cards require that two power cables are used the GTX660 needs one. The chassis has been flipped through 180 degrees here with the GTX660 sockets on the left, for clarity of illustration.
Insert the other (large) end of the PCIe power cable into the graphics card. Then remember to slide the PCIe fan casing back to its original position, thus locking down the rear of the graphics card. Insert the PCIe card retainer and tighten the thumbscrews.

So I need to ask Will I risk burning out my machine if I use this card? Are there any steps or notes for running this card safely? Or will it run just fine if I install it correctly with the adapter?Īs a note the majority of work I'll be doing will be video encoding and digital graphics I do game, but I don't play particularly graphics-intense games (E.g. I don't want to buy a lower card on account of my machines specs, as I'd like this card for whatever future computer I may build. The Nvidia website says I should have a power supply capable of 600 watts, and that the card would draw 250 watts (some forums say the card regularly exceeds even that). For the record driver compatibility is not an issue, as I don't use OSX any more (Kubuntu Linux).
